History
Since it was founded in 1972, the primary goal of the Cote-des-Neiges Black Community Association has been to meet the needs of English speaking and largely West Indian community who at various times, have experienced difficulty receiving essential community services from the dominant mainstream community. Prior to the 1970’s St. Henri and Little Burgundy districts were core areas of concentration for most Anglophone Blacks in Montreal. By the late 60’s and early 70’s the Cote-des-Neiges community, LaSalle and N.D.G. had become the primary residential areas for English speaking Blacks. The Cote-des-Neiges Black Community Association was formed in response to reports of discriminatory practices being directed towards Blacks by para-public institutions such as hospitals, schools, immigration and other legal systems. At the time, both linguistics Black Communities were experiencing similar struggles regarding their integration into the Quebec Society. CDNBCA developed in a climate of hope and collective activity towards change. The leadership behind CDNBCA was motivated by their belief that it was important to promote a sense of unity and community building among African Canadians of diverse national origins.
